Certified Cicerone® FAQs

Q: What are the pre-requisites for the Certified Cicerone® Exam?
A: Registrants must be of legal drinking age and must have passed the Certified Beer Server Exam.

Q: How much does the Certified Cicerone® exam cost?
A:  Initial test: $395; Retake Tasting: $100; Retake Written: $175. Exam fees are non-refundable

Q: How do I study for the exam?
A: This is a challenging exam which requires substantial preparation. Use the Certified Cicerone® Syllabus to guide your preparations. Please see our Cicerone Study Materials and our Resources & Links.

Q: What is the format of the exam?
A: Written exam with short answer and essay questions plus tasting and a demonstration component. The exam takes approximately 5-6 hours to complete. For more information on the format of the exam please see the Certified Cicerone Exam Details page.

Q: How do I sign up for the exam?
A: To register for an exam- go to the Exam Schedule and find a suitable exam location. Click "Register" to go to the product page. Select your exam type (first time, retake written, retake tasting) & date and add to your cart. Note that there is a six week waiting period between written exam attempts.

Q: What is a passing score on the Certified Cicerone® Exam?
A: A grade of 80% overall and at least 70% on the tasting portion are required to pass. For more detailed information please see Certified Cicerone Exam Grading

Q: What is the pass rate for the Certified Cicerone® exam?
A: The pass rate fluctuates year to year; currently the average pass rate is less than 50%

Q: How long does it take to receive my score results?
A: Typically, results take 4-6 weeks. Please contact us if your exam was more than 6 weeks ago and you've not yet received your results.

Q: How do I postpone or change my testing date?
A: Please call the office or contact us ASAP if you cannot make the test date you signed up for.
 
All non-emergency postponements must be made a minimum of two weeks before the scheduled exam date. Failure to do so will result in a $25 rescheduling fee. 
If you fail to attend the exam you are registered for without previously contacting a member of the Cicerone Certification Program staff, you will be charged a $100 no show fee before you are able to reschedule your exam. This is applicable to retakes of both parts, first time full exams and written retakes. If you were signed up for a tasting retake only and do not attend the exam or contact a staff member prior, you forfeit your registration.

Q: How do I pay my rescheduling fee?
A: Please call the office to pay by credit card over the phone, or to get our address to send in a check.

Q: I'm interested in hosting a Certified Cicerone
® Exam
A: 
If you have a group of six or more individuals who would like to take the exam and have an available venue, we will work to schedule an exam for your group. We will give priority registration to your group, and then open registration to that exam to the general public at least six weeks before the exam date. If you are interested in scheduling an exam for your group please email sales at cicerone dot org

Q: Am I the [youngest, oldest, first, etc.] Certified Cicerone
®?
A: 
We do not collect information about candidates' ethnicity, gender or age and therefore don't promote anyone's claim to titles such as youngest Certified Cicerone®, or the first female Certified Cicerone®, etc.
