Master Cicerone® FAQ

Q: What are the pre-requisites for the Master Cicerone® Exam?
A: Starting in 2018, Must have passed the Advanced CiceroneTM exam. Registrants must be of legal drinking age.

Q: How much does the Master Cicerone® exam cost?
A:  First time exam (2016): $895; Retake charged at 80% of current fee. Exam fees are non-refundable

Q: How do I study for the exam?
A: This is an extremely challenging exam which requires substantial preparation. Use the Master Cicerone® Syllabus to guide your preparations. 

Q: What is the format of the exam?
A: Candidates for Master Cicerone® will participate in a two-day examination that includes multiple written, oral and tasting components. The written component will consist of essay questions where candidates demonstrate the depth and breadth of their knowledge in each portion of the Master Syllabus.  Oral examinations will be conducted by four different industry experts and often involve hands-on demonstrations of knowledge. Taste assessments will include a broad range of off-flavors, blind assessment of beer styles and advanced assessment of beer acceptance. 

Q: How do I sign up for the exam?
A: Registration for Master Cicerone Exams will be capped at 24 candidates per exam. We expect to run all future Master Exam registrations by lottery. We will announce the lottery period via email to all eligible individuals. Anyone interested in taking the exam must submit their name for the lottery. We will randomly select names from the lottery pool to fill the exam roster. We will continue with random selection until the pool is exhausted to generate a list of alternates for the exam. Any confirmed candidates will be asked to submit payment within one week or forfeit their spot. Alternates will be emailed that day and notified of their alternate number. In the event that a candidate withdraws from the exam, alternates will be notified in order, and asked to submit payment within one week.

Q: What is a passing score on the Master Cicerone® Exam?
A: A candidate must achieve a score of 85% to earn the title of Master Cicerone®

Q: What is the pass rate for the Master Cicerone® exam?
A: The pass rate fluctuates year to year; currently the average pass rate is less than 10%

Q: How long does it take to receive my score results?
A: Typically, results take 6-8 weeks. Results are reported via telephone.

Q: How do I postpone or change my testing date?
A: Please call the office or contact us ASAP if you cannot make the test date you signed up for. 
If you're postponing more than 6 months from your exam date, you will be charged a rescheduling fee of 50% of your registration, and will get the remainder of your fee in a coupon code towards another Master Cicerone registration.
If you're postponing less than 6 months from your exam date or if you fail to attend the exam you are registered for without previously contacting a member of the Cicerone Certification Program staff, you forfeit your entire registration.

Q: How do I pay my rescheduling fee?
A: Please call the office to pay by credit card over the phone, or to get our address to send in a check.
